Biggest help would be to keep politicians our of military conflicts. No such thing as a "nice war". Either go all out or don't go. I remember Flip Kerry's statement about fighting a "kinder and gentler" war on terror.

If politicians want to fight a war maybe we should let them do just that. Send them all to war and let the military stay here and run the country.

Ezactly. Gen. Patton had the same concern over old soldiers who forgot how to be a soldier once they got into politics. War is a nasty business that should be left up to the ones trained to fight them. After the war is over is when we need statesmen to go about the "kinder and gentler" approach of the US. I'm sicked and tired of what Paul harvey often calls a "pulled-punches" war.
"Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on."

That has been my second biggest gripe.(Right after, we don't need to be there) But, Bush is the one making the ROEs, isn't he?

Yep, and keep the military out of politics. Like the dispute between the 2 parties in Iraq. Or the mess in Georgia.
